SERENITY Flies / (deutsch)

Here's the thing: I don't watch TV. Having to watch things dubbed into German makes me nervous, commercial breaks drive me crazy, and most of the stuff that's on bores me to tears anyway.

So, when my son, who was eleven or so at the time, started to disappear every Wednesday night to watch this show called BUFFY, I didn't get it at all. Only when I came into his room accidentally while the musical episode was on did I realize that this might be ... different. So I started buying it on DVD no commercial breaks, English sound, and, to make the bliss complete, no week-long waiting between episodes.

Truckloads of BUFFY and ANGEL DVDs later, I told some friends in the Stage & Screen Section of CompuServe's Books and Writers Community (which was then still the much-less PC-sounding Litforum) about my newfound admiration for Joss Whedon's awesome storytelling talent.

And they promptly recommended FIREFLY ...

FIREFLY was never aired in Germany, it will only be released on DVD here on November 14, 2005, a  week before the movie SERENITY opens in theaters. It was another revelation, a treasure of smart and touching stories, witty dialog, wonderful characters, great actors, inventive photography and lovely music.

While the show was cancelled in the U.S. way too early, it has now come back as a real movie. I was lucky enough to meet Joss Whedon and his leading actors, Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau, for interviews in Hamburg last week.

       Here's what they said

   and

       here's what they look like.

Enjoy. And watch this space for more information (like my German FIREFLY Review).
